THE SOLIDARITY ECONOMY AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CAPITALISM: A FOCUS ON THE SEARCH FOR COLLECTIVE WELL-BEING

Abstract

The Solidarity Economy has emerged as an economic model that challenges the traditional dynamics of capitalism, where individual enrichment often prevails over collective well-being. This perspective focuses on cooperation, social justice, and environmental sustainability, which raises the fundamental question: Is the solidarity economy an alternative to capitalism, where society seeks enrichment at any cost? This essay will address this question by exploring the fundamental principles of the solidarity economy, its relationship with capitalism, and its focus on promoting collective well-being.

Fundamental Principles of the Solidarity Economy

The solidarity economy is an economic model that emerges as an alternative to capitalism. This model focuses on people and the sustainability of life, rather than the accumulation of wealth at any cost. These principles include cooperation, self-management, equity, economic democracy and sustainability. In contrast to capitalism, which often promotes competition and individualism, the solidarity economy encourages collaboration and collective decision-making.

The solidarity economy proposes practical initiatives in all areas of the economic cycle (financing, production, marketing and consumption). According to Walden Bello, an influential Filipino economist from the organization “Focus on the Global South”, within a non-capitalist economy, it is self-management between consumers and producers, rational production and consumption, that will make possible a planned economy that covers the needs of the population, without falling into the overproduction of capitalism. This model faces practical challenges for its development, since it is part of a non-solidarity global economic system. Despite these challenges, the solidarity economy remains a viable alternative to the global capitalist system.

Next, the values attributed to the solidarity economy will be explained in more detail:

a) Cooperation: In the solidarity economy, people come together in cooperatives and other forms of economic organizations to satisfy their common needs and goals. Collaboration replaces competition, which reduces exploitation and promotes solidarity.

b) Self-management: Workers and communities have greater control over their economic activities and decisions in the solidarity economy. This is opposed to capitalism, where decisions are often made by a minority of owners.

c) Equity: The solidarity economy seeks to reduce economic and social inequalities. It focuses on the fair distribution of benefits and equitable access to resources and opportunities.

d) Economic Democracy: Instead of a small group of owners making economic decisions, the solidarity economy promotes democratic participation in economic decision-making.

e) Sustainability: The solidarity economy places particular emphasis on environmental sustainability and social responsibility. It seeks to minimize environmental impact and promote ethical business practices.

Relationship with Capitalism

Although the solidarity economy presents significant differences with capitalism, it does not necessarily replace it in its entirety. Rather, it can be seen as an alternative that coexists with capitalism. In many societies, both economic models operate in parallel, allowing people to choose how to participate in the economy. Some cooperatives and solidarity businesses compete in the capitalist market, while others opt for a more independent approach.

Collective Wellbeing as a Priority

One of the main differences between the solidarity economy and capitalism is its focus on collective well-being. While capitalism often prioritizes individual profit and the accumulation of wealth, the solidarity economy seeks enrichment in terms of improving the quality of life of the community as a whole. This does not mean that the pursuit of profit is excluded, but rather that it is contextualized within a broader framework of social responsibility and equity.

Conclusions

The solidarity economy represents an alternative to capitalism that emphasizes cooperation, equity, economic democracy and sustainability. Although it coexists with capitalism in many societies, its focus on collective well-being and the promotion of social and environmental values distinguishes it as a significant proposal to address current economic and social challenges. Instead of seeking enrichment at any cost, the solidarity economy seeks to enrich society as a whole, promoting a more inclusive and sustainable economic model.
